Crazy for Walking started in 2017 with a walk from Pretoria to Cape Town. The walkers walked for 5 weeks and arrived in Cape Town on 10 October 2017, World Mental Health Day. You may ask why we would walk such and extreme walk, easy answer; We walk Crazy Walks to distigmatise mental illness!!!! The three participating hospitals were, Vista in Pretoria, Crescent Clinic in Cape Town and Bloemcare.
A very important part of Crazy for Walking is our Crazy Socks, we wear crazy socks while we walk (advertise the socks?)
Last year on 10 October we attempted a Crazy 12 Hour walk at the Free State Athletics Stadium. We walked from 06:00 – 18:00.
We kicked of our campaign with warm up walks at The Airborne Café on 28 September 2019 and 5 October 2019, we started walking at 08:00. The walk was a circular route varying in distance, you could choose how far you wanted to walk. A treat for the children (and some adults) was the paratroopers jumping out the airplanes and landing right next to the restaurant.
WOW what a day we had on 10 October 2019…. We walked to Cape Town and back!!
On the day all participants managed to walk a sum total of 2 300 km. Imagine our surprise when we realized that we had walked from Bloemfontein to Cape Town and back. There was a constant flow of walkers throughout the whole day, at no time during the day was there a bit of time to rest and relax.
There was a variety of people walking from young children to our Golden Oldies. Companies sent employees, we had a few students from the university and even two of our very own Free State Cheetahs who had won the Curry Cup two weeks prior.
The 5 member Bloemcare Team who participated in the National Challenge had to have someone walking on the track at all times. Our team did so well and came 2nd, they missed 1st place by 400 meters. Well done ladies, you made Bloemcare proud.
With the current COVID-19 pandemic Crazy for Walking 2020 will happen this year, we are still planning on how! Watch this space for more exciting news about Crazy for Walking
