Focus of workshop
This workshop address challenging ethical decision making processes in the context of
broken health systems that impact on the quality of service provided to patients. The
presentation will address the responsibilities of healthcare workers working in private and
public health systems that sometimes violate the rights of patients and that increase the
risk of ethical violations by healthcare professionals.
The Life Esidimeni example will be used to illustrate the ethical dilemmas practitioners
encounter in these situations. Specific challenges regarding dealing with resource failures,
whistleblowing, secure communication with patients, maintaining professional boundaries
and training of support staff in healthcare practices are addressed.
The attendees will discuss value conflicts that practitioners encounter during complex
decision-making processes and will apply different norm systems to assist in resolving
these ethical dilemmas. The Patients Charter will be presented to clarify the rights and
responsibilities of patients and practitioners. Risk management strategies will be
discussed to assist practitioners with the identification of specific ethical risks in their
practices. Responsible ways of addressing risky health system will be discussed.
